Paul Penders Natural Cream Lipstick Review: Sandstone

I’d never have even come across Paul Penders and his products, if I didn’t happen to read Vivawoman’s entry on them and entered the generous giveaway for 5 lipsticks to 5 lucky ladies. Yay me for being one of them and thanks to Paul Penders and Vivawoman for hosting the giveaway.

Paul Penders is Dutch in origin, with his products made in Langkawi, Malaysia. Here’s an excerpt from the Australian website that shows what PP stands for and an interesting tale of how their facilities came to be located in Langkawi.

Paul Penders strives to create the best organic plant-based products available. One outcome he’s proud of is that his fight against his own Dutch government helped influence the entire cosmetic industry for the better. Paul Penders is convinced that those who work passionately for what they believe in will make a difference.

Today, Paul Penders continues to create skincare innovations using organic ingredients based on a traditional recipe from his grandmother. The future is about responsible, ethical skincare which are effective and natural.

Relocating To A Virgin Rainforest

Paul’s frequent travels around the globe in search of pure ingredients led him in 2003 to the rainforests of Langkawi island in the Andaman Sea. It’s a two-hour boat trip from mainland Malaysia. The island geopark, one of its kind in the world, is truly a paradise with abundant herbs, plants and flowers. This pristine setting with its abundant plant life inspired Paul to relocate his R&D facilities to Langkawi Geopark. This is the place where Paul Penders’ formulations are created.

So here’s the colour that fascinated me – Sandstone – described as

A warm medium pink, like sun dancing on the rooftops of Bermuda’s pink stone cottages

Which at the time was represented by this colour chart below

I took a chance on it being less beige than shown and my gamble paid off 🙂 Without further ado, here’s the product I received from the giveaway.

The simple, no frills white tube houses 3.5g of lipstick that retails at AUD$26.

Made with 22 certified organic herbs soaked in natural plant oils for extra moisture (sounds like a lot of work!). For prolonged wear use lip gloss after application.

Never tested on animals (no, I don’t find monkeys wearing lipsticks to be particularly appealing) and the lipstick is good for 12 months after opening.

LevensEssentie Gold sounds mindboggling, but it’s

LevensESSENTIE Gold® is the secret to every Paul Penders product. It’s a concentrated extract of 22 certified organic herbs, pioneered by Paul’s grandmother some 100 years ago in Holland. Today’s version is a mixture of Eastern and Western herbs from USA, China, Europe and Malaysia. LevensESSENTIE Gold® has been proven to provide a healthy complexion by combating free radical damage. Its extraordinary anti-aging ingredients, such as vitamins A, B, C & E, enzymes and phyto-tocotrienols counteract the early signs of aging and sustain healthy skin.

The wholesome botanical ingredients make for a rather long list:

:-Ricinus communis (Castor) oil, Organic LevensESSENTIE Gold® {Angelica archangelica (Angelica) extract, Arnica montana (Arnica) flower extract, Calendula officinalis (Calendula) flower extract, Matricaria recutita (Chamomile) flower extract, Sambucus nigra (Elderflower) flower extract, Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) root extract, Panax quinquefolium (Ginseng root) extract, Lonicera japonica (Honey suckle) extract, Humulus lupulus (Hops) extract, Equeisetum hyemale (Horsetail) extract, Juniperus communis (Juniper) fruit extract, Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) flower extract, Melissa officinalis (Lemon balm) leaf extract, Urtica dioica (Nettle) extract, Centella asiatica (Penny wort) extract, Mentha piperita (Peppermint) leaf extract, Rosemarinus officinalis (Rosemary) extract, Salvia officinalis (Sage) extract, Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s wort) extract, Curcuma longa (Turmeric) root extract, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch hazel) extract, Archillea millefolium (Yarrow) extract}, Copernicia cerifera (Carnauba) wax, Euphorbia cerifera (Candelilla) wax, Calendula officinalis (Calendula) flower oil, Pinus Pinaster (Pycnogenol), Tocopherol acetate (Vitamin E), Ceramide III, [ +/- (may contain), Titanium dioxide, Iron oxide red, Iron oxide brown, Iron oxide black]

This will satisfy those seeking paraben free products, which might also account for the 12 months recommended use-by date, as commercial, chemical-laden lipsticks tend to keep longer after opening.

And that’s the gorgeous tube of Sandstone awaiting me when I opened the holder. Exactly what I was hoping for, a warm medium pink!

Paul Penders has also since updated their website to include colour correct lipstick photos, which is very essential when you’re ordering such products online.

Close enough, don’t ya think?

The Paul Penders natural cream lipstick in Sandstone is reasonably pigmented. The swatch on the left is 1 simple swipe down the back of my hand, with its counterpart on the right a heavily swatched version.

Here’s how Sandstone looks on my exfoliated lips, with several layers of it. No lip gloss atop.

My thoughts:

The colour is a very summery, wearable shade that serves to brighten the face. It is matte, but not flat. Texture wise, cream/creamy is certainly apt. It feels rich without being oily on the lips. However, if you have slightly dry bits, it’s best to exfoliate your lips (I did), before applying this, as mattes are not your dried bits’ best friends. Sandstone also works to whiten the teeth, despite being a warm pink rather than being a cool toned shade 🙂

There is no scent to the lipstick, which should appeal to the ladies that fancy natural, organic products that often do without unnecessary fragrances. On longevity, there will be slight fade after sipping from your cuppa tea and it certainly won’t tide you through a whole meal, leaving you with a balm-like feel on your moisturised lips.

All in all, this seems to be a well-balanced and carefully thought out product. The 8 matte shades and 1 lipgloss are in very wearable, staple sort of colours. While not ultra moisturising, this natural cream matte lipstick is subtly moisturising and more importantly, doesn’t settle into your fine lines. If you’re an eco-conscious lady looking to invest in quality natural makeup, this is a product you might wish to consider adding to your stash.
