Skincare Lipcare Review: Pangea Organics

Here’s the Pangea Organics Pyrenees Lavender with Cardamom Lip Balm I received in my  January 2011 Bellabox (subscription box in Singapore).

It’s from the US and can be purchased at US$12 online here for US readers or SGD$14.50 on Bellabox here for Singapore readers.

There are 3 scents available. Italian Red Mandarin with Rose, Egyptian Fennel Grapefruit and Sweet Orange and mine. All 3 sound pretty exotic.

The claims:

THE BALM. Our organic lip balm features deep-moisturizing, healing oils to provide tremendous staying power without that unwanted waxy feel. Nourishing, protecting and highly bioavailable (easy for the body to use), they penetrate deeply into the skin for long-lasting protection. Rich in vitamins, nutrients and essential fatty acids, each lip balm contains powerful healing properties that are good for you, good for your lips.

Organic Tamanu Oil is a restorative oil with a multitude of beneficial applications that is cherished as a sacred gift by the Tahitian natives. Organic shea butter is the natural fat from the fruit of the karate tree in West Africa. Shea is deeply penetrating, melts at body temperature, is a carrier for other botanical ingredients, a superior moisturiser and skin conditioner, skin rejuvenator and provides protection from the elements.

Available in three flavours:

Pyrenees Lavender with Cardamom – contains organic lavender essential oil, organic Tamanu Oil and organic shea butter. Healing, antioxidant, calming and reviving.

Egyptian Fennel, Grapefruit and Sweet Orange – contains sweet orange essential oil, organic Tamanu Oil and organic shea butter. Antioxidant, euphoric, soothing and vitamin-rich.

Italian Red Mandarin with Rose – contains Rose Otto essential oil, organic Tamanu Oil and organic shea butter. Soothing, vitamin-rich, hydrating and protecting.

The ingredients for mine are:

HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL*, CERA ALBA (BEESWAX)*, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) OIL*, LECITHIN (SOY)*, CANNABIS SATIVA (HEMP) SEED OIL*, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER*, CALOPHYLLUM TACAMAHACA (TAMANU) OIL*, ALOE BARBADENSIS (ALOE VERA) GEL*, TOCOPHEROL (VITAMIN E), LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) OIL*, LAVANDULA HYBRIDA GROSSO (LAVENDER) OIL*, ELETTARIA CARDAMOMUM (CARDAMOM) OIL*, CITRUS SINENSIS (SWEET ORANGE) OIL*

*CERTIFIED ORGANIC INGREDIENTS

This product is Gluten-Free

My thoughts:

I was expecting to dislike this because I don’t really fancy cardamom. It’s too warm a scent for skincare imho. To my surprise, Sweet Orange Oil is the dominant scent in this. With a tinge of lavender. I don’t really get any cardamom at all, which is a boon in this case. Whew. Otherwise I’d have ditched this.

It’s a fat tube of 7 g and turns with the twister at the top of the main tube. No problems with retracting this back.

It doesn’t have much of a shine, as you can tell from my hand swatch. Despite the oils and shea butter you see in the ingredients, this is a thin sort of balm that goes on your lips. It doesn’t have the wonderful rich coated feel you get from balms like Epically Epic’s or even Silk Naturals. If you’re a guy, I guess this is a good thing as you won’t feel like you’re wearing something on your lips. If you’re someone that likes to layer on a thin balm before lipstick, this is your kind of product.

For those looking for ultra moisturising properties, however, this doesn’t quite cut it. While it moisturises, it’s not a deep sort of treatment that protects the lips. It doesn’t last all that long too. After a cup of tea or 2, I find myself needing to re-apply.

I’m on the fence about this product and I daresay you can find better value elsewhere performance-wise. Unless you like the majority of the products in the ingredients to be certified. It’s also a good balm for your guys who don’t mind the Sweet Orange scent.

I’m not a huge fan of herbal/flower scents in lip balms, so these scents don’t appeal to me, and I can’t use shea butter in lip products (it makes my lips crack). Glad I’m not missing out on something amazing.
